Sabbath: God Rests

Sabbath Overview

God rested from His creation work on day 7.
Sabbath rest was commanded in Exodus 20:9-11 after God’s pattern.
The Sabbath command was NOT reiterated in the New Testament.
Jesus is our rest (Hebrews 3-4, Matthew 11:38-30)
We still have principles of rest to apply.

Pause working in order to savor God!

  1. Recognize your limitations

God’s work was finished, and it was VERY GOOD!
Our work cannot measure up… we can always do MORE, BETTER.
Rest teaches us a dependence on God.
There is more to life than work!

  1. Offer your worship

Rest is not ENTERTAINMENT and PLAY, but enjoyment of God!
This rest honors the God who created (Exodus 20:11) and the God who delivers (Deuteronomy 5:15).
Our worship sets us apart from the world as holy. (Romans 12:1-2)

  1. Refresh your soul

Rest is a blessing, not a burden!
We need proper sleep… even more, we need proper soul nourishment!
Don’t define yourself by your work, but by your relationship with God.
Don’t be so caught up with work that you miss the beauty of our Lord!
