"How to Listen to the Bible" Sermon Discussion

During our midweek Life Groups, we discuss applications of the sermon and pray for one another. Here you can find the discussion questions for our sermon series on Our Response to Scripture.

These questions coordinate with our sermon series from August 4 to September 15, 2019: "How to Listen to the Bible."

Each week, we will start the discussion by asking,

What insight does Proverbs 2 give on how God will “direct our paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6)?
What do the verbs in Proverbs 2:1-4 teach us about how to “listen” to the Bible?
What difficulties do you have with treasuring God’s commandments (Proverbs 2:1)? What helps you to treasure them?
Why does the world have such powerful attraction even among Christians (Proverbs 2:12, 16)?
How is biblical understanding deeper than knowledge (Proverbs 2:5, 9)? Why is it so important for walking the straight path?

James 1:22 doesn’t say to “do” the Word, but to “be doers.” How can we make obedience to the Word a lifestyle, rather than single actions?
In what ways are we deceiving ourselves when we hear the Word but don’t do it (James 1:22)?
We don’t remember every sermon we ever heard... but too often, we might entirely forget what we heard that day or that week. What are some ways to help us remember God’s message (James 1:24)?
God’s Word is like a mirror because it reveals God and we see ourselves in light of who God is. How does that go deeper than mere self-improvement?
Why is perseverance necessary in doing the Word (James 1:25)? How is it tempting to look for quick results?

Why does Jesus warn his disciples to take care how they hear (Luke 8:18)? How are we just as vulnerable and just as needy for caution?
How can you prepare your heart to most readily receive God’s Word (Luke 8:8, 15, 18)?
Are you “choked” by the cares and riches and pleasures of this life (Luke 8:14)? How long has this been a struggle? How can you get serious and recognize Jesus’ warning?
Are you willing to let God’s Word sting with correction, rather than seeking only the “feel-good” parts of faith in Jesus (Luke 8:13)? What changes does this mean?
How does God’s Word equip you to face testing and trials so that you don’t fall away (Luke 8:13)? Share of God’s grace through His Word in recent trials.

What advice would you offer to a Christian who doesn’t like what the Bible says about a particular subject (John 6:60)?
What are some places the world and/or Christians turn to for answers rather than the Word of God (John 6:68)?
The Jews had anticipated a different Messiah and were ready for national deliverance... now (John 6:15, 26)! How can we hold fast to God’s Word when it’s slow or undesired?
How can we guard against “itching ears” (2 Timothy 4:3) and trust that God’s ways and thoughts are better (Isaiah 55:8-9) and will accomplish its purpose (Isaiah 55:11)?
How can we as a church help one another to turn to God together when struggles come (John 6:67-68)?

Many people read the Bible for one of three things: information, faith, or moral instruction. Which one do you tend to look for most?
Why is it extremely important to “see” God in His Word as you read the Bible? How will that help in your spiritual growth and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:17)?
How does Scripture help you to “profit” in life (2 Timothy 3:16)? How can you keep that perspective before you?
How does Scripture equip us to for righteousness (2 Timothy 3:17) and all we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3)?
