No Shortcuts: The Necessary Cross (Matthew 4:1-11)

Satan is real!

  • Powerful, but not omnipotent
  • Clever, but not omniscient
  • Watching, but not omnipresent

Satan seeks to tempt us to evil.
God seeks to test us for righteousness.
Jesus is our Great High Priest who knows our weakness and gives us victory!
The cross is the necessary path, for Jesus and for us!

Choose God’s path through the cross to overcome temptation!

  1. Treasuring the Father’s provision 3-4

Our appetites prompt us to settle for less than the Father’s perfect provision!
The Father teaches us dependence through testing. (Deuteronomy 8:2–3)
Satan can subtly deceive us to devastating compromise!
Jesus faithfully resisted a shortcut to satisfaction.

  1. Treasuring the Father’s protection 5-7

Our prideful demands prompt us to presume on the Father’s promises!
The Father wants us to remember His care! (Deuteronomy 6:16, Exodus 17:7)
Satan can subtly deceive us by twisting the Word of God!
Jesus faithfully resisted a shortcut to acceptance.

  1. Treasuring the Father’s inheritance 8-10

Our worldly longings prompt us to sell ourselves for empty pursuits!
The Father wants our undivided devotion. (Deuteronomy 6:13)
Satan can subtly deceive us to worship and serve created things!
Jesus faithfully resisted a shortcut to glory.
