Work in Progress: How to Change Bible Study

Beginning September 30, we are studying "How to Change" together online! Pastor Luke will be leading us through a look at progressive sanctification, and how the Bible equips us to grow in areas of struggle! Are you frustrated, discouraged, or weary in your battle against sin? God is not finished with you yet! Each one of us is a Work in Progress!

Bible Study Questions

What does it mean to "walk in the light"? How can we be sure we are walking in the light?
What does it mean to "confess" sin? How can we confess sin with the proper attitude and mindset?
Can a believer have broken fellowship with God? How can fellowship be restored and maintained?
How do we avoid cycles of repetitive sin and confession?
How does true confession enable our growth and change?

Are desires predominant in temptation? Can we be tempted without having desire?
Why might we blame God or circumstances for our temptations?
God always provides an escape route in temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13). What are some clear paths to avoid succumbing to sin?
James 4:1-4 describes the controlling nature of addiction. What kinds of addiction are even Christians vulnerable to?
How can we pray in the midst of temptation? What should we pray for?

How would you define union with Christ? How does that empower our changed lives?
In what ways might we put on the attitude of Romans 6:1, whether blatantly or subtly? What excuses do we make for our sin?
Why does Paul point to our baptism in Romans 6:3?
How would you describe our freedom to someone who thinks Christianity is all about RULES? How does that freedom empower living for God rather than sin?
How do we "offer" ourselves to sin (Romans 6:13)? How can we offer ourselves instead to God?

In transitioning to practical application, Paul starts with unity in relationships. What implications does that have about the importance of community for our growth?
How can we find opportunities for growth in the midst of conflicts?
What is the process and means by which we move toward maturity (Ephesians 4:11-16)?
What does Christian maturity look like? What are some indications that we are moving in that direction?
Where do you see love mentioned in this passage? What is its role in the process of growth?

What questions do you have about the fruit of the Spirit?
Why are these character traits called "fruit" (Galatians 5:22-23)? What does that teach us about these qualities?
What do you think about these characteristics? What would your relationships be like if this fruit was continually evident in your life?
What place does our effort have in growing this fruit?
How do the works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21) creep into the life of the believer?
In what ways do we produce artificial or counterfeit fruit in our lives?
What is the relationship of freedom in Christ to the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:1)?
