Purposeful Self-Control

We are incredibly vulnerable without self-control! (Proverbs 25:28)
Possible masters: emotions, alcohol, sex, food, money, TV, internet, hobbies…
Self-control = dominion within

  • Negative: resist, bridle, restrain
  • Positive: pursue, strive after

We must willingly surrender to God’s control! (Hebrews 2:8, 2 Corinthians 5:14)

Cultivate Jesus’ self-control by the power of the Holy Spirit!

  1. Focus yourself on value

What matters most?  What matters eternally?
Beware of chasing a perishable crown!  What is your treasure? (Matthew 6:19-21)
We cannot allow our passions and desires to rule us! (Galatians 5:24)
Our ministry impact on people is worth it! (1 Corinthians 9:22-23, 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20)

  1. Push yourself with purpose

Beware of going through the motions of life aimlessly!
God calls us to purpose! (Philippians 3:14)
Self-control begins in the mind, understanding God’s purpose. (Romans 12:2, Ephesians 4:23)
Self-control avoids the wrong targets AND aims for the right targets! (1 Timothy 6:11)

  1. Guard yourself with discipline

Beware of overconfidence. Watch your step! (1 Corinthians 10:12)
Take action and do the hard work of training in God’s grace! (Titus 2:11-13)
Self-control involves pain and sacrifice!
Our bodies must be slaves, not masters.
